What Is LED?

We have all referred to energy efficient lighting as “LED,” but many people say it without knowing what it really means. We will cover the basics of LED lighting, so next time it comes up in conversation, you will be prepared.

LED stands for “light-emitting diode” which is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it by the movement of electrons. They do not get especially hot or burn particularly bright, therefore conserving energy. Popular places LED lights are found are in TV remotes, digital clocks, and on household appliances. They are now also being used for indoor and outdoor lighting because a single LED light will surpass the life of an ordinary incandescent light bulb by thousands of hours. As a matter of fact, when properly installed, an LED light can function for decades. So if you are truly wishing to go green, LED lights are the way to go with less waste production and lower power requirements.
