Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Clearwater & Tampa Bay was honored to recently work on a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home designed by the esteemed architect Joe McClung and built in 1961. mid-century modern home sits on 3 lush acres, has multiple terraces, and is in Wright’s famed Usonian style. We were excited for the opportunity to do the outdoor lighting for such an architecturally relevant home right here in Clearwater, FL.
Outdoor Lighting Fixtures Are the Backdrop to Elegant Illumination that Paints the Story of any Home—Humble or Famous
The current homeowners of the property were looking to ensure that the outdoor lighting paid homage to the architectural elements that Frank Lloyd Wright stirred. The single level home has a decidedly modern Asian Prairie vibe that is quite simple in overall design, so we wanted to make sure the fixtures themselves were low-key in appearance to fit the dignity of the home. We knew the illumination coming from the fixtures had the centerpiece of our installation, and that the fixtures themselves had to be hidden or carefully positioned so that they practically disappeared into the setting. Our designers and installers sensitively worked their magic in placing 47 LED all-metal fixtures that are made right here in the USA.
The grounds around the home feature several 100+ year old oak trees that are spectacular in size with their wide branching canopy. We knew we had to play up these stately trees with low consumption LED well lights at their base that would send up glowing rays of light to play up the gorgeous texture of their trunk, bark and twisting branches. Several palm trees around the property got the royal treatment, too, with commercial grade LED flood lights that offer the latest in outdoor lighting technology.

Flood lights were again used with great result on the fabulous flowing bamboo clusters that guide guests around the 300 foot long circular drive toward the home. The homeowners were keen on drawing attention to the bamboo as a focal landscape element, and the uplight effect of their swaying leaves in a light breeze is breathtaking. An enormous spectacular oak tree grows literally within the framework of the carport and hangs over the roofline in quite dramatic fashion, so we played up this unusual feature to stand out in a vivid way and bring attention to the wow factor it creates. The home’s roofline, terraces and staggered planters are all beautifully pulled together thanks to a carefully conceived outdoor lighting plan intended to make this Frank Lloyd Wright style home a unique treasure in Florida’s Gulf Coast.
