At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte, we know a thing or two about the true benefits of LED outdoor lighting. We know the benefits of energy savings and waste reduction. We tout bulb life and beautiful, warm glowing color choices. We speak about the beauty, safety, and security of outdoor lighting for your home and yard. Did you know that one of the facets of safety provided by LED lighting is pest control? It’s true – LED bulbs can help keep light and heat seeking bugs at bay as you enjoy the great outdoors this summer!
LED lighting is less attractive to bugs, but why?
To begin to answer this question, let’s address why other bulbs are attractive to bugs! Bugs are attracted to incandescent bulbs for two reasons. First, is the bright light emitted is easier for them to see than a yellow CFL light, specially made for bug control. Then, there is the heat attraction factor – bugs are drawn to heat produced by incandescent bulbs. While yellow CFL bulbs’ light attracts less bugs, they still produce heat that bugs love, and are particularly attractive to two super-pesky bugs – the stink bug and pincer bugs, called “earwigs".
Warm glowing LED outdoor lighting is less attractive to bugs than incandescent and yellow CFL bulbs! The reason is simple. LED lighting contains no UV rays, and produces very little heat. Do you currently have an incandescent lights outdoors? Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Charlotte offers LED lighting upgrades and retrofits. There is no time like the present to adapt your old lighting system to LED for added bug protection when warm weather arrives!
Why is bug control so important to your family’s safety?
Aside from being a nuisance, there are pests that can prove detrimental to your family’s health. We have mosquitoes, which can carry and spread diseases, like West Nile virus and encephalitis. In addition, mosquitoes are the culprit for heart worm disease in dogs. It makes sense for us to hire a professional pest control company to keep our family and pets safe. Most dog owners are wise to heart worm prevention medications, and make sure their beloved pets are protected. Adding LED exterior lighting is one more step in the right direction for pest control and disease prevention efforts that we already make for our families!
Arachnophobia, anyone?
Remember all those spiders you saw in your yard and on your front porch last summer? Do you know they build their webs by your incandescent lighting, because it’s warm, and they know that their food source will be attracted to it? Many of us have an aversion to spiders, over any other type of bug – even the non-poisonous varieties. LED lighting will be less attractive to spiders’ food sources, and thus, less attractive to spiders. Less spiders can also mean less rodents around your home. That’s a win-win-win!
