If you want to survive in the jungle – blend in. In business, you need to stand out to thrive.
I was recently watching a show about rainforest animals. The program made a simple, yet profound point: if you want to survive in the jungle, you need to blend in. Good camouflage is what keeps successful predator’s bellies full, and successful prey out of those same bellies. It’s funny how different the rainforest is from business. In business, the goal is exactly the opposite: if you want to survive in business, you need to stand out. Companies spend tons of marketing money to make sure that they are noticed for their product, their brand, their building, their logo, and so on.
However, many businesses, especially small businesses, inadvertently overlook the marketing power of light and the marketing opportunity of night. The most successful business are always thinking smart, and even if they aren’t open at night, smart business owners take the chance to stand out by investing in night-time advertising.
Try this – next time you are driving home at night, look around, see what gets your attention. Where is your eye drawn? What signs do you see? How do you feel about the signs that you see? Because many signs are not illuminated at night, the illuminated signs really stand out. Adding outdoor lighting can be a great marketing tool. Good outdoor lighting helps your business easy to find at night. Now look little closer, how many signs have bad lighting? Do you see “hot spots” and “dark spots” on some signage? What does that say to you? Cheap lighting that is poorly designed, or that works infrequently is a problem. In fact, sloppy lighting can send the wrong message about the business brand you have worked hard to cultivate.
