With homeowners becoming more conscious of living a “greener” lifestyle, line voltage and low voltage have become a thing of the past. The same rings true as far as holiday lighting types such as incandescent and CFL’s. LED outdoor lighting of all types is a smarter solution. We would like to take a moment and give you the information you need to make the best choice for your Atlanta-area property. Whether it is traditional outdoor lighting or Christmas outdoor lighting Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Atlanta has you covered.
What Does Low-Voltage Mean?
When it comes to understanding the “lingo” and terminology of outdoor lighting, low voltage is one you will likely hear often. To understand low voltage, it is first necessary to explain its predecessor, line voltage aka high voltage or standard voltage.
Line voltage, standard voltage or high voltage are simply different names for line voltage. This genre of lighting was often used for outdoor security lighting, parking lots or large spotlights to illuminate very large areas of property. This old school lighting was costly to operate, and the bulbs were big and pricey. At this point in time, line voltage has become obsolete. It’s getting harder to find replacements because there are much better lighting options on the market which are more cost-effective. This type of lighting was used heavily in the 1970’s and 1980’s until low voltage outdoor lighting, aka halogen outdoor lighting, options arrived on the scene.
Low voltage outdoor lighting delivers more energy efficiency than line voltage because it utilizes a transformer to step down the power consumption. Instead of 120v, low voltage uses 12-24v of power. Low voltage (halogen) bulbs and fixtures are less costly to purchase; and since you are dealing with lower power you can only use as many fixtures as the total wattage offered by your transformer. So, there are limitations even with low voltage outdoor lighting. The danger of shock is also reduced significantly. Unfortunately, these bulbs don’t last very long and likely require replacement frequently.
Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Atlanta, we recommend replacement or upgrading line and low voltage traditional outdoor lighting systems to efficient LED outdoor lighting. In terms of Christmas lighting, we use LED because it is a greener solution of illumination loaded with benefits compared to other types of holiday lighting.
In the case of low-voltage (halogen), incandescent and CFL lighting, a federal law was passed in 2007 as part of the Independence and Security Act. The first tier of standards took effect between 2012 and 2014 and officially phased out 60-watt incandescent bulbs. The new standards effective in 2023 required everyday light bulbs (called general service lamps) to use 65 percent less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs, but still deliver the same amount of light. Most halogen products on the market cannot meet that standard. That means there is major shift in progress to LED and a phase out of halogen lighting products.
